[TSE 56] How to Master the Art of Being a Professional Speaker and Author with Hugh Culver

If you’ve been exploring the professional speaking path as a small business owner, you know that it’s not an easy route to take.[TSE 56] How to Master the Art of Being a Professional Speaker and Author with Hugh Culver

Hugh Culver, professional keynote speaker and author, has built his entire life around being an incredible speaker by mastering the art of storytelling, timing, and getting a clear message through to an audience.

He’s done over 2,000 keynote speeches and currently takes on forty-five engagements a year (after realising that 110 a year just wasn’t sustainable).

So what steps did Hugh take to go from giving seminars attended by just 3 people to creating a profitable career where he regularly keynotes for over 2,000 people?

Here is what you will learn in this podcast:

  • The art of being an effective speaker

  • What two tasks you should start doing to become a professional speaker right away

  • How to enter the highly competitive ‘expert community’ of speakers and authors
  • How he uses his speaking career to maximise his income (not in the way that you expect!)

  • How to find the right kind of speaking gigs for you in front of the right audience

  • What speaker bureaus are really looking for and what they need to see from you first

  • The exact words you should use to establish yourself as a speaker

  • How to craft your message for your speech so your audience never misses the point

Give Me a Break: Making Time Work For You

The key to a successful online business

LeadDynoFinding new customers in a cost effective manner is the quite frankly the key to any successful online business.  The best way to do this is to allow your customers and community to promote your products and services for you.

You do this by creating an “affiliate program”, where you reward your partners and current customers for referring new business your way. That’s why I’m so excited to introduce my new Podcast Sponsor LeadDyno.

LeadDyno is a tool designed specifically for online entrepreneurs who are setting up a formal referral program.  Here’s how it works:

  1. 1. When new affiliates sign up with you, they receive a unique referral link, so that they can send their friends and colleagues your way
  2. 2. When their referrals purchase your product, you provide them with a commission – which is automatically tracked, calculated, and paid by LeadDyno

The result is you get more business, without any up front cost.

The team at LeadDyno have kindly offered my listeners a free 14-day trial to start building your new affiliate program. Visit suitcaseentrepreneur.com/leaddyno now.

Some great lessons that can be applied to speaking and other areas as well.

    1. Create emotional impact. People will only remember 10% of what you are going to share. Wrap your message in a story or heartfelt message that would motivate people to make changes.

    2. Boil down the entire message into 3-4 point framework.

    3. Respect your time (because it is scarce). It will allow you to prioritize.
    4. Discipline and consistency is extremely important in anything that you do. Woody Allen said “80% of life is showing up”.
    5. Fake it until you make it.

  • Interesting episode again. Thanks Natalie Sisson !

I recently watched a TED presentation and I think it is the one Hugh Culver mentioned. It is the presentation by Amy Cuddy on how body language shapes who we are. Her phrase was “Fake it till you become it”. See http://on.ted.com/Cuddy to enjoy the presentation. I think Amy would be a great candidate for one of your next episodes!

I love your podcasts Natalie & you know how I listen to them – out mountain biking with my mad hound, Luna! You always ask great questions & the content Hugh provided is hugely valuable. This is one just seems perfect timing as I’ve just been asked to speak at an event next year in Switzerland. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this.
