157 CoverWhen I was in Vancouver in 2008, in the very early days of hustling as a cofounder of our tech startup, my good friend Sebastian said to me “We should do a Jelly session sometime”.

I was like “What?”

Turns out …

“Jelly is a casual working event. It’s taken place in over a hundred cities where people have come together (in a person’s home, a coffee shop, or an office) to work for the day. We provide chairs and sofas, wireless internet, and interesting people to talk to, collaborate with, and bounce ideas off of. You bring a laptop (or whatever you need to get your work done) and a friendly disposition.”

The Swedish version is called Hoffice.

After my friend Mick sent me the Fast Company article about it (see link below) I realized that I’d inadvertently been doing a version of this myself, here in San Diego, and throughout my travels.

Simply put I was inviting people around to cowork in our house we rented and in between focused working sessions, where we were all tapping furiously on our laptops, we’d look up and discuss some tactic or strategy, share a resource or tool or answer each others questions.

It is ridiculously satisfying to be surrounded by your peers who all geek out on the same stuff and motivating to know you’re all working towards amazing products, launches, content, applications, solutions etc…you name it. We are doing it!

So what the heck is Hoffice, or what I’ve dubbed Howorking?

“In the morning, 10 or 12 people might show up at someone’s apartment in Stockholm. They perch on the host’s sofa, sit at the kitchen table, and take phone calls in the bedroom. And by filling the space with people at work—and by setting up an unconventional structure for the day—everyone seems to find it easier to focus.”

What I like about the structure of this day is they do 45 minute sessions of all working on ONE thing. Then the timer goes off and everyone stops to exercise or meditate, share what they’re going to achieve in the next 45 minute session, and then BOOM they’re off again.

This is like coworking, accountability, productivity and goal setting all in one – all the elements that lead to success.
