I had a rare attack of the monster called FEAR earlier this week and I tell you it wasn’t pretty. We battled over a 24 hour period and it got ugly.
He threw some nasty punches and my defenses and technique were weak. I went back to my corner, feeling deflated, worn down and sick and tired of letting him get the upper hand.
So I talked to my trainer in the corner about throwing in the towel. On giving up. On just taking the easy path. She told me I hadn’t put in all this time and effort building up something incredible to be beaten by this asshole.
She was right. If I didn’t beat him now he’d always win. He’d always stop me from living the life I really wanted. From pursuing my big hairy audacious goals. From living my best life.
I jumped out of the corner and came out fighting with all the courage I could muster. A jab here, a hook there and a low blow below the belt and he got a real beating. I was stronger than Fear and he knew it.
He went down in a blazing heap, out cold and I threw my hands up in the air to the roar of the crowd. I had beaten fear and now nothing was going to stop me.
Victory over fear is in your hands
So I might have got a little carried away with the above but it gives you the a great visual, right? Once you give a name and form to something that’s just in your mind it becomes something you can deal with. Something tangible which you can then tackle head on.
In reality I know I will be visited by this ugly creature Fear many more times during my life, especially when I am extending myself out of my comfort zone. But each time it will get easier to defeat him.
When you’re doing something big, something really big it can be extremely scary. But that means you’re doing something worthwhile, something that will make a significant impact on many people and even leave a legacy.
You might be saying `But Natalie, I’m afraid. So what – so am I. It’s an excuse. Do you think Joan of Arc was carefree and happy as she rode into battle? No way, she was probably shaking in her metal Armour!
But her higher purpose, her vision for victory, for winning yet another battle that would bring her, and her people more happiness, peace and success overrode her desire to run away from fear and instead charge ahead and meet him head on.
I realised earlier in the week that I was just making excuses. I was listening to fear and letting him get to me.
Consider this victim scenario 1:
Fear: “Natalie you can’t possibly think you can launch your eBook next week and make it one of the most read eBooks of all time that people can’t wait to get their hands on and share all over the world do you?”
You: “No, no I guess not. I guess you’re right……what was I thinking I could never make this a success.”
Now jump to Scenario 2:
Fear: “Natalie you can’t possibly think you can -” **THUMP “**Owwwwww”.
You: Take that you lousy piece of good for nothing excuse. Now get out of my way
Feels good right. Tackling fear to the ground and moving on to get your important work done and bring it to the world, leaving him to try and stop the next person running by with a dream, with a vision, with a purpose.
As you look back you wonder what was the worst that could have happened anyway, and you smile to yourself as you realise it was really nothing in the scheme of things. I wrote about how to kick fear in the butt in my HighFlyer newsletter.
Put yourself first
One woman I admire for tackling fear is the lovely Dr Shannon Reece and this is a shameless plug for you to check out her fantastic free video workshop series running right now.
Shannon and I share the same vision. We want to ensure your desire for greater freedom gets met, and that you can dramatically grow your business without sacrificing yourself in the process and losing out to fear.
In January this year I took on Shannon’s Refresh-Her Challenge because frankly who doesnt’ feel like being refreshed, especially by a sport psychologist and former competitive athlete.
I signed up for her program and was beyond impressed. It asked some big questions. It forced me to really look at what was making me happy, what drained my energy, what my perfect day looked like and what habits I’d had in place since being a kid that were holding me back.
It made me look fear in the face and question why I was letting him hold me back from living the life I wanted. Suffice to say I loved it, as I do any challenge. Refreshing yourself is going to take some hard work but the results are so hugely worthwhile.
The best news? Dr Shannon is launching this program again, and thanks to our feedback it’s even better (not sure how that’s possible).
