[226] How To Conquer Your World In 2016 with Natalie MacNeil

Posted on /by Natalie Sisson/ in Podcast / 78 comments

If you’re in planning mode for this new year, then I bet that you probably feel like this:

  • You don’t know where to start or don’t know how to get started
  • Looking 12 months out feels like a big challenge, and a bit foggy and unclear
  • When you sit down to plan you get overwhelmed and end up avoiding it all together

226 Natalie_MacNeil QuoteIf so, you’re not alone.

That’s where today’s guest, Natalie MacNeil, comes in.

Natalie MacNeil is an EMMY Award-winning media entrepreneur, influential blogger, and thought leader in the sphere of entrepreneurship and personal branding for women – she’s also a dear friend who I admire greatly.

She is best known as the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of She Takes On The World, one of the top blogs in the world for entrepreneurial women. She Takes on the World appeared on the Forbes list, “Top 10 Entrepreneurial Sites for Women” and on the Forbes Woman list, “Top 100 Websites for Women.”

She has appeared in top media outlets like Glamour, People StyleWatch, Inc., Forbes, ForbesWoman, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Entrepreneur.com, Globe and Mail, Mashable, and more.

More importantly though, Natalie has an incredible ability to take something large and robust, and break it down into manageable steps you can start making progress on right now.

She’s proven this again and again by setting herself incredible stretch goals throughout her life and nailing them every time. It’s not only impressive, it’s a process that you too can follow.

If you’re planning out 2016, then this episode is perfect for you.

And…

If you’re listening to this in the future, it isn’t too late to start getting ahead so you can operate in your business with purpose and passion.

What you’ll learn in this podcast:

  • Why most “new years” plans fail these days (and what to do so that you follow through and enjoy the process)
  • What everyone does that keeps them from being reminded about their goals (and how to keep your plans top of mind all year long)
  • The most important thing you need to do when preparing for an upcoming year
  • If you create vision boards: why you might not want just one
  • The one little word to start using that allows for you to accomplish your goals in record time
  • What to identify before you plan your new year that keeps your grounded and focused on what matters to you
  • The major thing that stops you from seeing your goals to completion
  • What to do if you want to allow for big changes (that expand your business and life) to take place
  • How to avoid spending more time than necessary planning your month and year (and have a great time in the process)
  • The tools that you need to use (if you want to work as little as 4 hours a day)
  • A quick (but powerful) ritual you can start your day with that almost ensures you’ll be motivated
  • Why resolutions fail (and what to do instead so that you stay on track all year long)

Looking ahead, I think I will rest easy on Dec. 31 knowing I never stopped trying. I know I will spread myself too thin. I know I set lofty goals and say ‘yes’ to too many projects. But I’m going to keep punching in the ring this year. I won’t stop. I won’t give up. And I know I will rest easy this time next year knowing I met my goals face-on and got right back up every time I stumbled, towards my ultimate success.

    • That’s great to hear Lizzy and I like your never give up attitude. May I suggest by getting really clear on what you’ll say yes to and what you’ll say no to that you won’t inundate yourself with too many projects and hit all your goals 🙂

I would like to look back on a bunch of small attainable goals met consistently. I would like to look back on a year of my project and see consistent effort rewarded in consistent growth. I would love for others close to me to look back on 2016 and say “that is the year she finally found her stride” and relish in the overflowing joy and pride with me.

2016 Was such a great year! My small business is showing growth. One of the things I am most proud of is completing a 6-month self-healing program called Become the Human Crystal with Naisha Ahsian. It was intense but brought on so much personal growth. It has also contributed to my knowledge of crystals which is very beneficial for my business… since I own a crystal shop!

  • Great episode! I love listening to both of you, and to have both Natalies in one episode discussing just the things I’ve been working on is fabulous, so thank you, thank you, thank you!

I already had my 5 goals when I first heard Natalie M talk about 5×5 milestones (maybe a couple weeks ago by now?), so working on establishing those details…then started filling out my editorial calendar template from you, Natalie S! I’ve got it all set up with holidays and previously booked (and waiting on confirmation) events and talks I’m either attending or putting on…now just to move on to filling in the gaps with the milestones, 90-day sprint targets and plans, and my blogging/newsletter/speaking themes to support each goal! I love how all this is helping me set up and visualize my goals and targets to make great traction this year. I’m very much a visionary, and the mention of vision boards and maps in the conquer kit sounds great…help me to see it all in one place. Because 2015 was good, but 2016 is going to be my ground-shatterer!

So, on December 31, 2016, when I’m sitting back in my lounge chair, watching my kids splash in the surf at the beach somewhere hot like Hawaii (it’s cold and snowy here that time of year), I’ll be most proud of having trained and/or presented to over 1000 people, to have influenced, empowered and enabled them in some distinct way to make a positive change in how natural resource projects and developments are built, operated, and closed – to be more sustainable – shared value with surrounding communities, safe for the environment over their entire life-cycles, and yet still bringing economic value to society! (just getting started on sales of my first pilot this week – wish me luck!)

    Happy new year!!

Thanks to the “Nat’s” for another great listen! Like so many, my life is super busy and pretty crazy (good!) and your podcast often helps to re-center me.
I’m on year 6 of a 9 year plan to a different life- more freedom, working hard/smart for myself rather than another. Staying on track is always challenging though so these types of episodes are always a helpful reminder, as well as another tool in the growing kit to taking things to that next level.
Last year, in addition to my full time job, I started an online e-commerce business. This year, in addition to both those things, I’m embarking on yet another level to offer online marketing help to people in the handmade community. Most makers are trying to make a living doing what we love. While we are good at our craft, most don’t know much about marketing it. So, I found a way to give back and help others, while also training myself on the various online marketing products that are out there. So, the biggest answer to Natalie M’s question for me is to have succeeded in helping others while also growing my business. Wish me luck! 🙂

  • Aw, it’s awesome to see you two shining stars together in the same episode! woo!

I have SO many ambitious goals for my business (and personal life) that I aim to achieve this year. But, what I will be most proud of on December 31st, 2016?

I want to look back on the year knowing I lived with the utmost integrity. That I kept putting one foot in front of the other and took passionate action towards my goals but made sure I loved myself and my friends and family well along the way.

So whatever the actual measurable results are at the ned of the year, my highest achievement will be offering kindness to myself and others along the way.

On December 31, 2016, I will look back at the past 366 amazing days and be so proud of all I’ve achieved in the past year, especially the achievement of inspiring other people to make meaningful improvements in their lives, just by sharing my own journey to do the same! #rippleeffect

Hi ladies, thanks to you both for such an inspiring and thoughtful podcast!
I am very excited to get myself more organized and on track to having a wonderful 2016. This year my goal by December 31st is to work even closer to my ultimate goal of starting my own travel and service oriented gap year program. I am only a few years out of college and have a lot to learn as it relates to experiential education and owning a business, but I learn a little more each day and having a more quantifiable 5×5 plan is really going to help! I plan to delve further into learning a third language (Chinese) and gain more experience as an outdoor education instructor in Taipei, where I’ve been living since leaving the US in 2014. I also plan to travel, both for personal enjoyment and career opportunities. A vacation riding horses in Mongolia is way up on my wish list- surprisingly easy and affordable to do from Taiwan, and, as far as work is concerned, I’d like to finally make the plunge and apply for a trip advisor position for gap year travel programs. Thanks for the inspiration; just listening to your podcast and writing this out already feels great! I sincerely feel as though the work you continue to do has opened my eyes to a completely attainable and meaningful lifestyle, so thank you and keep it up!

Natalie and Natalie, it was the perfect podcast to start the new year! I believe this is going to be fantastic year.
On December 31st, 2016, I intend to spend some time quietly reflecting on all my achievements of the 365 days preceding.
I love that you’ve recommended keeping goals to a smaller number. I intend to also set monthly goals, as I work through each month… I believe setting goals is crucial… even when they seem small. Being dilagent about writing all of them down is new for me. For the first time, I’ve also written personal goals, such as buying a campervan, something I’ve been dreaming about for a number of years.
Thank you for sharing so many great nuggets in your interview, incredibly inspiring!
      Happy New Year!

  • Hi, Natalie! You’ve been on my mind and this could not be better timing! I’m moving Fetching Finn (my design/branding business) in the direction of “designs inspired by adventure” to reveal more about how my world escapades and adrenaline ambitions fuel my fire as a designer. Not just a designer who packs a laptop when she travels or sets up home abroad – but designs created as a result of those escapades. It’s going to be a fun and challenging twist.

Would love to end 2016 with a solid step in this is new direction. Would also love to reconnect with you and really take advantage of your Suitcase Entrepreneurism advice for this! Please enter me as a Kit contender…and let me know the best way to get started with some customized Natalie Sisson guidance.

31st December 2016 I will be looking back proud to know I have taken CONSISTENT ACTION! But most importantly, I hope to be saying “why didn’t I do this earlier?”…. The fire inside is ready to push me through the year full steam into entrepreneurial success.

    • PS I’ve listened to this twice now and I know I will listen again (and the download is on its way). One of your best podcasts in terms of content (at least content that is pertinent to me). Now to go back and find the one from January 2014!

      That’s wonderful Alison 🙂

  • Congratulations go to Karen Chovan and Morgan Rolan. You’ve each one a copy of the Conquer Kit. I’m giving away one and Natalie MacNeil has kindly offered up to send one from her end! I’ll email you both for your postal addresses. Thank you to EVERYONE who’s poured their heart out here and left such great comments!

So it turns out my post I thought I had posted wasn’t posted! It went (because I screen shotted it so I could put it in my yearly goal planner)… at the end of this year, I wll be contemplating my year as a gentle parent, allowing my children to have their emotions, without letting that interfere with what must be done, and living as a “nomadic” family with minimal clutter and maximal adventure (doing things, not having things) even if that means we have a fixed location because we have some health issues. I will be incredibly grateful for being able to support my husband as he and I take a big jump in to a business venture together and that my new app/platform is award winning and allowing us to live the life I have designed! Thanks for your amazing information Natalie and Natalie! Kindest thoughts, Storm
