How To Build An Online Business Even If You Have No Idea At All

Posted on /by Natalie Sisson/ in Build Your Online Business / 9 comments

You know what’s really frustrating?

I see so many people making the same mistakes when they start their business — they start following a set of tactics from a book or a course, they spend a few weeks (even months) trying it out, but in the end they give up.

No matter how hard they try, their idea just doesn’t seem to make money.

In fact, my ideas didn’t make money for me either when I started my business in 2010. And for six months I made zero income as I threw a ton of spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick.

But with six years of experience building a business while traveling full time, I now know how to avoid making these same rookie mistakes that most people do when starting out from scratch.

I feel your pain and don’t want you to be stuck in a business making zero income. Especially if it’s your money and freedom on the line.

So please, stop paying attention to the “experts” who promise to show you “the secret blueprint to building a successful business” or “the only way to build a business in 2016.

The truth is there is no cookie-cutter approach because building a successful business is all about creating a life of abundance and freedom for yourself.

How to build an online business even if you have no idea at all - SM

I want you to know that YOU have the power and the potential to create true freedom in your life, right now. You can build a business on your own terms, that supports your ideal lifestyle too.

You do not need any secret blueprint or formula if you follow these 3 steps.

Step 1: Create a business that serves your customer AND you

Most people start off by creating a business that serves either the customer or themselves.

You can research your market and your competition down to the last detail to build your business. You can even copy a successful company’s business model and use it to serve your customer.

You may find success, maybe even make a lot of money.

But if you end up feeling unhappy, feeling like you have built a job for yourself, what’s the point? Your business has failed to create freedom for you.

On the other extreme, you can’t just build a business by focusing on your needs only.

If you build something just because there is demand for it or it makes money, but you don’t really care about the customers, they will find out. If you don’t build a business that serves your customers, sooner or later they will stop buying from you.

But you don’t want that to happen either, do you?

Most business books and courses don’t talk about the concept of a business serving both the customer and you, because they still cater to the old paradigm of business.

However, if you get a little creative about it, it is not difficult to create a business that serves both your customer and you.

I like to call this approach, ‘finding your sweet spot’. What this means is simply finding the intersection between what you love to do, what you are good at, and what people will pay for.

You might have heard that all you need to build a successful business is to sell a product or service that people will pay for.

However, if you want a business that is profitable, makes you happy, and creates more freedom in your life, build a product or service that people will pay for, that leverages the skills and knowledge you have, and that you love to do (or at least, enjoy it).

Finding your sweet spot is an exercise you can do even if you have no idea at all. In fact, it is one of my favorite topics, so naturally, I wrote this blog post to help you find your sweet spot.

If nothing else, finding your the sweet spot will give you some ideas about what business you could start that would align with who you are as a person, as well as making sure that people will be willing to pay for what you offer.

Step 2: Get crystal clear on how you want to spend your time

When I ask people what their perfect day looks like, 99% of them say they have never thought about it.

I am really surprised by their response (even though I shouldn’t be anymore) because they have amazing dreams and all these things they want to achieve, but they have never taken the time to develop a clear vision for what a perfect day in their life looks like.

Worst of all, it’s not their fault.

The fact is, no one really teaches you to take time to come up with a vision for your perfect day because no-one truly realizes its importance. The point of envisioning your perfect day is to get crystal clear on how you want to spend your time each day.

And once you do that you’ll be amazed at how your vision starts to turn into reality. What you focus your thoughts on starts to actually come true.

You are what you think. So spend time thinking about who you want to become and what life you wish to have and it WILL start to happen.

But if you don’t know what your ideal day looks like, how would you know what to do today to get just one step closer to living that perfect day?

This becomes especially important when you are building a business and setting yourself up for a life of freedom. You want to envision your ideal lifestyle by taking into account the role business will play in it. Things like:

  • How much time do you want to spend on your business each day?
  • Will it be a business that you love, and can’t wait to dive into when you get up in the morning?
  • Will it be business that you are able to leave running like an automatic Rolex and fine tune it only when needed?

Writing out your perfect day is quite simple and actually a lot of fun.

Just imagine a day when you wake up and could do anything. There would be absolutely no limitations and no financial requirements.

  • What would you do on this wonderful day?
  • How would you spend your time?
  • Who you would you spend it with?
  • What would it look like, sound like, smell like and feel like?

Write it out in as much detail as you are comfortable with, and use it as an inspiration for the future of freedom and abundance you are trying to create for yourself.

In fact, writing out the perfect day is something that I’m always asking my readers, listeners, and clients to do before they start building their business. It’s even part of the first phase of my Freedom Plan program.

Start envisioning and writing down your own perfect day, so you can get crystal clear on how exactly you want to spend your time.

Once you do that, you can start living a little part of your perfect day now, and keep adding to it every day. Soon you will be living your ideal lifestyle.

Step 3: Get that life changing launch out of the way

The very first dollars I made online were from a digital program on using social media for business, which actually came from a sold out in-person workshop that I ran..

I set up a webinar, had a whopping 30 people show up live, and ended up making ONE sale.

It took me more than six months of making zero income in business to get to this point, but man, was that one sale exciting to get!

It changed my mindset completely about online businesses. I knew it was possible to make money online, in a way that was unique to my personality, and it would let me live the lifestyle I wanted.

Over the last 6 years, I have successfully built multiple six-figure businesses, completely online, which lets me travel the world full time. I have also helped clients launch their online businesses and seen them create more freedom in their lives — on their own terms.

By helping launch multiple six-figure businesses, including my own, I realized that once you have figured out your sweet spot and your perfect day, building an online business is relatively simple.

You create a product or service that you deliver to your customers online and you collect an online payment for it.

If this is your first time building a serious business, you might not have a six-figure launch. Heck, you might not even make $1000.

But believe me when I tell you that once you get that first launch, that first sale out of the way, you will start seeing a new world of infinite possibilities.

To keep things simple, I suggest just launching an online training program in the form of a webinar, or even just a digital guide (PDF).

I am really passionate about product launches, and you know me, if I’m passionate about something I love writing and speaking about it.

I promise you, the moment you do your first launch and get that first sale, and you realize that people will pay you for something you created without you even having to be in the same room as them, it will change your life.

Now it’s your turn to shine

That is all you need to create freedom in business and life

  1. Find your sweet spot and figure out a business that lies in it
  2. Get clear on your perfect day and how you want to spend your time today to eventually get there
  3. Launch your first online product to make that first sale

No secret formulas or blueprints required.

I am sharing this with you because I have made it my mission to help a million entrepreneurs create true freedom in business and life, by 2020, and I want you to be part of this Freedom movement.

What I have written in this post is what I wished I had known when I first started my business. But because I had to struggle to make income that initial 6 month period (and in reality the first 18 months in business), I understand how hard and overwhelming it can seem.

If you are in that same spot, thinking:

  • Do I have what it takes to build a business?
  • Can I really do this?
  • What if it doesn’t work?
  • How do I know if I’m doing the right thing?
  • Where do I even begin?

Don’t worry, I have you covered.

If you want to implement these ideas and concepts in your life and business, I explain each of these steps in detail in my NEW online course, Idea To Income.

Go from no idea to your first online income in 30 days

This course will help you discover what you most want out of life, and then go about creating the best business that supports you in truly living your ideal life.

I have poured every last ounce of my knowledge and experience into this course to guide you through:

  • Finding your sweet spot to discover the perfect business idea at the intersection of your passions, existing skills and experience, and what people will readily pay for.
  • Helping you come up with a clear vision for the lifestyle you want to have, create your Perfect Day, and start living it.
  • Launching your first product/service in the next 30 days with the help of a step by step Launch Guide and Checklist.

In the end, it’s not just about building a business, I’m talking about a freedom business that you love, that brings in consistent recurring income, but doesn’t require you to manage it day in day out, so that you can go out and chase all the adventure and freedom you want.

If freedom in business and life is what you truly desire (and I think you do), but you have no idea how to go about it, Idea To Income is the next best thing to having me by your side personally.

Hi Natalie, after reading this comprehensive article I figured we’re on a first name basis. My question is a simple one: does idea to income provide income for me, you, or both? and what proof is there that assisting to your lifestyle will assist mine? I love that you have attained a way to live online, found a way to get out of the office, and found a way to use your impressive talents, but there is a degree of web skills involved here. As i try to grow a simple Irish music and culture blog, that web skills factor, turns into the fear factor. I like your concept, and a pleasure to read, Cheers,
    Brian.

    • Hey Brian. Great to hear from you. So far it’s helped many members figure out just how they can get income from what they’re good at, what they know and what they enjoy doing. People are having real ah-ha moments, often with ideas that have been staring them in the face.

You don’t necessarily need web skills to earn money – services, events etc can be offline based ones. And what you don’t know you can hand over to someone who does – the power of outsourcing so you can focus on what you do best. But also don’t fear tech – YouTube, Vimeo and blogs have tons of free resources and training so you can learn as you go.

Thanks for the reply, that ah-ha moment is a great thing, usually followed by a ah crap what do I do now moment, also a good thing. Pat yourself on the back for a helpful reply as many do not reply in a helpful way.
        Thanks again,
        Brian.

  • Hi Natalie, I have been listening to your podcasts about traveling, especially to Portugal. I thought about going there. I’m a fine artist (as in I work with my hands creating beautiful art 🙂 Anyway, what are your impressions of Lisbon compared to other places? Also, I’m trying to think of how to live as a digital nomad and sell my art anywhere in the world. Do you have any artists that became successful with your course? And I’m trying to figure out my best ideas to making my dream a go. It’s tough to sell to locals (I live in Taiwan now, teaching English) and would rather spend my time painting. My site is https://joshualance.com Thanks, I look forward in hearing from you soon!
