Are You A Serial Hobbyist Or A Fully Committed Entrepreneur?

By Natalie Sisson ·

Heads up: this post is from 2011. The ideas hold up, but some tools, prices and links will have moved on since. For Natalie’s current work, head to NatalieSisson.com.

I get a lot of my community members saying that they’re worried they won’t succeed in business because they get bored too quickly.

The common theme is they like to work on multiple projects at a time and often don’t end up finishing them. They get distracted by the bright new shiny object that jumps in their way on a weekly basis.

Whether that’s a brand new idea, a joint venture opportunity or simply a distraction that seems more appealing then the work they’re doing right now.

It’s all too easy to avoid the work that matters, to be disciplined and stick to your guns to create something worthwhile, not matter what.

I particularly liked the lovely Catherine Caine’s quote in Cori Padgett’s excellent article on entrepreneurial wisdom, insight and inspiration from 61 of the best entrepreneurs:

“I was a serial hobbyist. I’d get fanatically interested in a subject, spend money and time on it, thinking, “This is the one, baybee,” and then after about four months the honeymoon was over and I’d abandon it. It was hard for me to push through that and believe I could keep going for the long haul, keep meeting my commitments and not just fade away. It turned out to be startlingly easy once I dug in.”

Well first off you’re not alone and secondly you have to stop this behavior and do what Catherine has done above – focus, commit and stay true to your BHAGS you set in your New Year business plan or resolutions.

Big Hairy Audacious Goals (aka BHAGs) are there for a reason. To keep you working towards your ultimate dream, your perfect lifestyle, your grand vision, the legacy you wish to create every day and leave for the world to benefit from.

Aimlessly scanning Twitter, reading through your email instead of doing real work, watching TV, dozing off and picking your nose are not world changing projects or activities!

I believe with everything in me that there has to be something more to this life than the way everyone around me is living it.  I understand that doing things differently involves risk but I am convinced that the people I love and the things I love doing are worth it. I know that the worst outcome possible is doing nothing.

It’s time to put your heart and soul into something that’s worthwhile. To leave a legacy. Each time you get off track you need to come back to your mission and stay true to it.

Anyone can come up with an excuse. Anyone. The true world changers tell their Lizard brain to shut up and get on with it instead.

Quit not letting your true essence in this world shine through. Stop repeating habits that get you nowhere.  Let your genius emerge so that the world can benefit from it.

That is all. Just do it.
