[176] Debunking the Starving Artist Myth with Julia Kelly

Posted on /by Natalie Sisson/ in Podcast

What is a starving artist? Well according to Wikipedia, a starving artist “is an artist who sacrifices material well-being in order to focus on their artwork. They typically live on minimum expenses, either for a lack of business or because all their disposable income goes toward art projects.”

176 QuoteThat’s not what I want for you and I truly believe it’s about time creative entrepreneurs and artists start earning what they’re worth, building scaleable businesses they love, while still being able to enjoy plenty of time in their creative zone.

That’s why I brought in Julia Kelly in this podcast episode to debunk the starving artist myth and talk about how to make money doing what you love.

Julia is a caricature artists, which basically means she gets paid to make fun of people for a living – and a living that saw her go from US$8.50 to $250 per hour and building a 6-figure freelance business from scratch.

In 2010, starting college late at age 22, Julia had also taken a part-time job but she wanted to make more money so she decided to apply as a caricature artist in San Diego at a amusement park.

She didn’t have any experience and training but she took a shot and got the job at Legoland California. She was working for 8 hours a day on a minimum wage.

She started out earning $8.50 per hour working for a big company as a caricature artist at a theme park which was a great learning experience for her.

She didn’t think it was possible to charge more until she had one gig in Legoland and they paid the artists $100 an hour. That opened her eyes to what was possible in terms of earning real money as an artist.

The thing is, there was just one of her and each caricature took time to do and meant she wasn’t able to scale as quickly as she liked and was limited by the number of clients she could take on.

By 2013, despite having zero marketing experience, she started doing digital caricatures as a solution to scaling her business. What’s more she stepped out of her comfort zone and hired help.

She found other caricature artists who were more than happy to work for her and take over her increasing client base, and all this led to a 46% increase in revenue!

So if you want to hear her story and take away the gems Julia provides on how to do this yourself, listen in now.
