Natalie,

Lots of good info on this post. I'll agree that to some degree, you don't need a lot of polish as long as you know who your audience is and deliver the type of content they're looking for. A perfect example would be these series of videos by sales trainer (and friend) Victor Antonio: http://salesinfluence.wordpress.com. Sales tips - fast & fresh without wasting the viewers time with any fodder.

With a little focus on framing/composition [watch this excellent short video: http://vimeo.com/1461280) and trying to get the best audio you can (cheap lavalier mic & mp3 recorder is much better than on-camera mic! What good is it if your audience can't hear you well?), you can produce simple & informative videos for your clients/subscribers to enjoy without the costs of hiring a professional videographer/editor.

Then there are my own promotional videos that have to be several steps up from the do-it-yourself variety: http://vimeo.com/10660642
Fortunately for me, there are also many businesses/professional organizations who's needs go beyond quick video ads or tutorials and are in need of a creative video artist to help them tell their story. They are also willing to pay for a distinctive video production, knowing that you get what you pay for (especially in video!). That the growth of online video is rocketing is great news for those who are creative with a camera but, more importantly, know how to market their services to those that are willing to pay for it.

Nuff said. . .

Great comment Robert. I like the example of the Dog Trainer using it successfully and I can see how that would work well for him. It would be great to know more about embedding more videos into the eBook so everyone can learn that trick.

Thanks

We've done a lot of videos for our sister site and we've found interviews are a great way to get a viral jump start. The person being interviewed is excited about the video and will post it on their own blog and share it with their friends who are likely to post to their blogs.

We've also found that viewers don't expect perfectly polished videos. So entrepreneurs don't have to get overly stressed with production value. Just jump in and get started... you'll get better as time goes by.

I like Flip Video Cameras because they are cheap and easy to use. Shoot your video, plug the Flip into a USB port and the provided software allows basic editing and YouTube uploading with a click. It's crazy easy.

An example of an entrepreneur effectively using video is a dog trainer I like to watch. He offers great instructional videos and promotes his ebook with each video. Plus, ebooks can be embedded with more videos which make the ebook even more valuable.
